PRESIDENT BUSH SIGNS DIVESTMENT  BILL

January 1, 2008 – President Bush signed the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act of 2007.  The legislation allows states and local governments to cut investment ties with Sudan.  It presents a choice of stop enabling genocide in Darfur or lose business!

TOUGH JOB AHEAD FOR PEACEKEEPERS

7,000 peacekeepers, of the orginal 26,000 planned, have entered into the Sudan.  Only about 1400 UNAMID (joint UN-African Union) peacekeepers are in Darfur.  “With so many troops and gear still missing, we can only fulfill some of the mandate of the UNAMID.*” General Martin Agawi, the force commander, told the Associated Press. Countries are still not offering crucial equipment such as helicopters. However, trust between the refugees and the UNAMID is slowly building.  The mission is resuming at least two daily, unarmed patrols throughout Darfur’s camps, said superintendent David Eklu, of Ghana.  We are building up to having a 24/7 presence,” he said.  At a later stage, there are plans to resume a mission known as “firewood patrol” where police accompany women refugees to protect them from rape by armed militia members, when they leave the camps to collect wood for cooking. Hopes are there will be more peacekeeping troops to come.
