Move
to Less Secure Areas According to
the United Nations News Center, a team from the United Nations, the AU
Mission in Sudan, and the International Organization for Migration, was
initially denied access to the Otash refugee camp. After much
negation, they were finally allowed to enter the camp, in time to
witness ten vehicles with machine guns surrounding a group of refugees. The police told the team
the refugees were being relocated to Amakassra.
Groups like
Human Rights Watch* accuse the government of trying to move displaced
people to locations that are more remote and less secure. Under-Secretary General
for Humanitarian Affairs, John Holmes, stated “We have had
many meetings with the Government of Sudan; stressing that any
relocation should be voluntary and should adhere to the guiding
principals of internal displacement.
Given that security forces were threatening the
displaced with sticks and rubber hoses at Otash camp, the involuntary
nature of this relocation is clear, and is contrary to agreements with
the Government.” Peacekeepers, 26,000 strong, are set to
deploy in January 2008, in the hopes of stabilizing a war torn Darfur. Peace talks set in Libya
have so far accomplished very little. *Sources: UN News Centre 10/29/07
